Eclipse - Adding your existing files as a project

Its been a while since I blogged ... and here it goes ...

In Eclipse, a direct drag and drop wont import all your files of an existing project. But you still want to use them to develop or just to examine the contents of the files. To do that .....

Step 1 : Choose your workspace as something which is the parent of the existing folder. For ex :

There is a folder A which has B and the B folder has C in it. cd A -> cd B -> cd C
If you want to import B, choose A as your workspace.

Step 2 : File -> New Project -> PHP Project ( in my case ) and then Name the project as B. Now, choose "Create a project at existing location".

Step 3 : Then add the required folders and you're done.

I currently am working on learning CodeIgniter - an Open Source PHP Framework and will post my learning experience here.

Stop Autorun applications in Ubuntu 11.10

Guys ... a quick Ubuntu post ( also for my reference :D ) ...

There was this bluetooth which always started up whenever I logged into Ubuntu ( Unity or GNOME ) .. and thus consuming my battery if I forgot to switch it off. Ultimately .. I wanted to turn it off and here it is.

Open the terminal and then

cd /etc/xdg/autorun/

Then ...

ls

NOTE : Backup before you delete !!!

You will find all the applications that run on start up.
To stop the bluetooth from running .. just delete the bluetooth file.

sudo rm bluetooth-applet.desktop bluetooth-applet-unity.desktop

And thats it !!! :) Peace !!!

PHP : Wanna edit in something new :D

Hello guys, if you are following me on Facebook, the you'll know that I currently am not in Hyd. So ... where am I ??? At Vijayawada, doing a MT Event. The event is for 10 days, so .... ten days without my laptop would be like ... no air for about 10 mins ... :D

Since I have lots of work to do after I get back home ( project, web-site for the cube tourney, another project and GATE coaching along with my personal programming training )

I said programming training because :( I recently got to know that I almost forgot Java and without NetBeans am a complete waste ) ... So ... did a little research on java or php and guess what :D ... I am happy with php ... Am planning on learning a few more languages along with HTML ( properly ) and JavaScript which include Ajax, Python and PERL ( if possible ).

Now, coming to php development, I've been doing lots ( dont mistake lots for a huge project or a module, its just nothing with compared to the real developers out there. ) of coding on the gEdit Text Editor and after watching a few videos in which TextMate ( MacOS ) was used, I really loved it and decided to move to an IDE.

I had the Netbeans option and just by installing plugins, I could do with php but .... Netbeans and Eclipse became the standard and go-to applications for many languages and I wanted to try something new.

I already used Komodo which was really nice, and Geany, which was nice too. So wish me luck coz I just am trying to use the ZEND Studio and I hope it'll be great. :)

Komodo Editor 6.1.1

Hello friends,

As I put up on my facebook status, from now on I would be dedicating time to update my blog and share the information that I get while browsing the web or hacking on some php code.

Until now, I've used Geany, which was really an excellent editor for php. But now, I recently came across Komodo which has become my favourite Editor with the first edit of php code.

I liked the features and the way it really works while editing code especially. The way it handles blocks of code is truly worth appreciating. Here is a small how-to on installing Komodo IDE 6.1.1 on Ubuntu/Debian.

Step 1: At the time of writing this post, on 4/4/11, Komodo Editor is in the 6th Version. You can get it by clicking here.

Step 2: After downloading the tarball, you can extract it using the following command ( Ctrl + Shift + T for terminal ).

tar xzvf Komodo-Edit-6.1.1-7295-linux-libcpp6-x86_64.tar.gz

Step 3: Using the cd command you can just browse into the extracted directory and then run the install.sh file using the command :

./install.sh

NOTE : There shouldn't be any permission related issues, but if there are any, please do run the below command and then go for the install.sh file.

sudo chmod 755 install.sh

Step 4: In the middle of the installation ( which won't take much time ) you will be prompted for which directory the installation should proceed in. There you can give the path / address of the folder of your choice or, you can just give it as,

/home/(user_name)/Komodo-Edit-6/ and then move on.

Step 5: Now is the time to create a Desktop Shortcut, which probably will be a favourite among the migrants from Windows to GNU. So, you can do that by running the following command in the terminal.

sudo ln -s "/home/(user_name)/Komodo-Edit-6/bin/komodo" /usr/local/bin/komodo

That will create a symbolic link of the original executable file onto the Desktop.

PS : I am working with Komodo-Edit-6 on the 64Bit version on Ubuntu 10.10 and its working perfectly fine.

More about php and my projects and related work, later. :)

Clean Urls on Drupal6

Hello friends, I recently installed Drupal6 on my machine which operates on Ubuntu 10.04. So this being pretty new , I also wanted to change from Drupal 5 on drupalcafe.com to Drupal6 on 127.0.0.1

I basically dont like the urls to be unidentifiable and hence wanted to enable Clean Urls feature as soon as I setup my Drupal6.

But the thing was , my system was tested and Drupal6 dint support the feature. So after a bit of ( a lot of ) googling and understanding ... I found out this very simple hack / tweak that helps you enable the feature.

So here it is ... enjoy ...

First what you do is , check if the mod_rewrite is available or not in Apache2.
To check , please key in the following in the terminal
( Applications > Accessories > Terminal )

apache2ctl -M

*If you dont have Apache2 installed and just Apache installed , you can try this out as well.

apachectl -M

In the output, please check if the rewrite_module is included or not.

NOTE :
If it is not there in the list .. please leave this article and google around on " how to load the rewrite_module in Drupal6 " because though I have an idea ... I perfectly cant guide you through the process.

Update :
Just install the " rewrite_module" using the following command.

sudo a2enmod rewrite

Then restart apache2 using the following command.

/etc/init.d/apache2 restart

So continuing with the step-by-step instructions ... The following command works to enable the module without editing any files:

a2enmod rewrite

We then have to restart Apache server

sudo /etc/init.d/apache2 restart

Then we move on to edit the htaccess file which can be done by using gedit.

sudo gedit /etc/drupal/6/htaccess

Then search for RewriteBase /drupal  to  RewriteBase /drupal6
Save the file and then restart Apache again.

Then move on to http://localhost/drupal6/?q=admin/settings/clean-urls and enable the Clean Urls feature.

Hope this post was useful in someways for someone.
Thanking you .. !!!

Convert WMA file format to AVI in Ubuntu ( Debian // Slackware // Fedora , etc ) And Vice-Versa

Hello friends, most of you might be having a problem while upping your personal videos or any video as such into your phones because they support only specific file formats.

So here I present to you , Mencoder which converts WMA file format to AVI format.

For Ubuntu :

sudo apt-get install mencoder

mencoder infile.wmv -ofps 23.976 -ovc lavc -oac copy -o outfile.avi

Similarly for Fedora :

sudo yum install mencoder

mencoder infile.wmv -ofps 23.976 -ovc lavc -oac copy -o outfile.avi

For something Vice-versa ... that is convertin from AVI to WMV , we have ffmpeg which is a famous command that most of you must have tried or atleast heard about.

The process for converting the file is as follows :

sudo apt-get install ffmpeg

ffmpeg -i "Input.avi" -s 320x240 -b 1000k -vcodec wmv2 -ar 44100 -acodec wmav2 -ab 56k -ac 2 -y Output.wmv

LAMP !!!

Hello friends, its been a while since I posted something technical. So here I am posting the last tech post of the year 2009, which is the procedure to install the LAMP Server or the Linux Apache MySQL and phpMyAdmin.

This is basically to test the server on a local host and then make it a server or, the site contents can be first tested locally and then can be hosted on an external server which is accessible 24x7.

The HTTP Server : Apache 2
The Database : MySQL
PHP Compiler : phpMyAdmin
*CMS ( Content Mangement System ) : Drupal

*Basically, the CMS is not needed but the inclusion makes it easier to manage sites and all related stuff.

So here it is,

NOTE : Please run all the commands in the terminal.

For Debian / Ubuntu ( GNOME ): Applications --> Accessories --> Terminal
For KDE : Start Menu --> Konsole (Terminal)

Installation of Apache2 :

Multimedia and Codecs on Ubuntu

For all the people who are migrating to Ubuntu from Windows ..... here is a nice package where you have all the codecs and all the support from Ubuntu for the windows files that you have.

Go to Terminal ( Applications -> Accessories -> Terminal ) and type the following command.

sudo aptitude install ubuntu-restricted-extras

You will be prompted to enter the password of your 'root' account. Enter that and confirm the Installation ( you will be asked to press yes/no -- hit a 'y' ).

Through this pack you will be able to get codecs to play MP3 files and other GStreamer Plugins, Microsoft Fonts, JRE and Flash Plugin and a host of other features.
